AFP-VA Responds to Gov. Northam’s Inaugural Remarks

Grassroots organization pushes back against calls for Medicaid expansion

RICHMOND, VA – Americans for Prosperity-Virginia (AFP-VA) today responded to Governor Northam’s inaugural speech and his call to expand Medicaid. The grassroots organization has long opposed Medicaid expansion and instead supports patient-centered reforms that provide better health, for more people, at a lower cost.

“The status quo of Medicaid is unsustainable and to ignore that fact is an irresponsible if not dangerous approach to improving health care in Virginia. Expanding Medicaid to able-bodied, childless, working-age adults would create a massive burden on taxpayers and crowd out resources intended for truly needy populations like the elderly and disabled,” said AFP-VA State Director JC Hernandez. “If Governor Northam is truly intent on ‘working together to make our Commonwealth work better for all Virginians,’ then we hope he’ll listen to all Virginians, including our activists who know this program would explode our budget and make it more difficult for the truly vulnerable to receive the services they need.”
