AFP Utah Thanks Lawmakers for Passing Barrier Breaking Reforms
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Americans for Prosperity-Utah (AFP-UT) ended the 2020 legislative session by thanking activists and lawmakers for working to ensure legislation that will improve the lives of every Utahn passed this year.
The grassroots group made hundreds of calls to lawmakers and brought activists to the capitol to speak to their representatives about the reforms that would positively impact them and their families.
AFP-UT State Director Heather Andrews had this to say about the 2020 session:
“On behalf of thousands of activists across Utah, we’d like to thank our lawmakers for passing meaningful reforms that will enable more Utahns to achieve their American dream.
“From occupational licensing reforms that will allow more individuals to find fulfilling work, to criminal justice reforms that are smart on crime and soft on taxpayers, Utah lawmakers heard the voices of their constituents and made sure these barrier breaking reforms will become law.”
Key 2020 reforms supported by AFP-UT:
- SB 23 – Universal license recognition. This bill streamlines the process for professionals working in other states to attain licenses in Utah.
- SB 201 – Occupational licensing reform that prevents automatic license denial due to an individual’s criminal history. Individuals who have paid their debt to society deserve a second chance and an opportunity to find fulfilling work. This will strengthen our communities and reduce recidivism.
- HB 206 – Bail and pretrial release reform that gives judges greater discretion when determining the conditions in which a person should be released prior to their trial. This will prevent individuals who are simply too poor to pay their bail from sitting in jail, while also protecting public safety.
- HB 332 – Special needs scholarship bill. The Special Needs Opportunity Scholarship will give families, who were previously financial unable, to choose the education option that best meet their child’s unique learning needs.
