Trenton, NJ — Americans for Prosperity (AFP) released a statement urging Governor Sherrill to opt into the Education Freedom Tax Credit program as the January 1 deadline approaches. Under the program, taxpayers can receive a federal tax credit of up to $1,700 for their contributions to qualifying organizations that grant scholarships. The scholarships can help cover a range of education costs, including tutoring, special education services, school supplies, and tuition.
AFP Northeast Regional Director Ross Connolly said:
“New Jersey families and students do not deserve to fall behind the rest of the country because Governor Sherrill refuses to opt into this program. New Jersey families are already squeezed by high taxes and a high cost of living, and this is a chance to give them relief and more options for their students.
“This program costs New Jersey taxpayers nothing—in fact, not opting into the program will result in New Jerseyans watching their tax dollars leave the state to create educational opportunities for students in states that have opted in, like New York. AFP urges Governor Sherrill to enroll before the deadline and put Garden State families first.”
