AUSTIN, TX – Today, Americans for Prosperity – Texas (AFP-TX) announced its endorsement of five candidates for the Texas House of Representatives, including the official re-endorsement of two candidates who are back on the ballot for the May 28th runoff election.
AFP-TX chose these candidates for their steadfast commitment to school choice in Texas, which will be a top legislative priority for the organization during the 2025 legislative session after legislation introducing Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) backed by Governor Greg Abbott failed to pass after four special sessions of the legislature this year.
Last month, AFP-TX celebrated the wins of 10 of its 13 endorsed candidates for the Texas primary elections, who defeated several incumbent lawmakers who had opposed the universal school choice bill.
Genevieve Collins, state director for AFP-TX, made the following statement:
“We’re proud to throw our support behind these outstanding candidates who will fight for freedom and Texas values.
“After last year’s failure to pass Gov. Abbott’s historic education bill, there is no room in our legislature for members of either party who don’t support providing ESAs and universal school choice for our students. AFP-TX will do our part to make sure it gets done in 2025.”
Re-endorsements:
Alex Kamkar (HD 29) – Kamkar, a former member of the Pearland, TX city council, is a self-described “fiscal hawk” whose deep knowledge of local spending and budgeting processes will make him a bastion of fiscal responsibility in the state House. He is a strong advocate for school choice and will be an ally in the fight for providing Texas students with ESAs.
Jeff Bauknight (HD 30) – As an entrepreneur and the former mayor of Victoria, TX, Jeff Bauknight possesses a wealth of knowledge on economic policy and will champion pro-growth economic and fiscal policies in office. Bauknight is a principled, liberty-loving candidate who will prioritize expanding individuals’ freedoms in health and expanding school choice.
New AFP-TX endorsements:
Katrina Pierson (HD 33) – Pierson is a fierce freedom-fighter who is ready to lead the fight for educational choice at the Texas Capitol. Drawing on her years of experience in the health care sector, Pierson will be a leading proponent for innovative health care policies like direct primary care that put patients first.
Alan Schoolcraft (HD 44) – Schoolcraft is a former member of the Texas House who is ready to jump back into the fray and fight for education reform and passing ESAs. He is a longtime advocate of commonsense fiscal and tax policies who supports lowering property taxes, cutting spending, and slashing burdensome regulations like occupational licensing so that Texans can have an economy that works for them.
Helen Kerwin (HD 58) – Kerwin is the former mayor of Glen Rose, TX, whose strong track record of fiscal responsibility and advocacy for school choice will propel her to victory in her runoff election next month. She sees education freedom as a critical issue for Texas families and believes in empowering parents to send their children to schools that can best meet their needs.
AFP-TX will support these candidates’ campaigns through targeted mail and digital advertisements and by deploying its expansive network of grassroots activists to knock doors, make phone calls, and canvass their communities until they win in November.
