AFP to Durbin & Duckworth: American Families Aren’t Political Leverage

Nov 5, 2025 by AFP

SPRINGFIELD, IL – After weeks of refusing to engage in bipartisan discussions to end the “Schumer Shutdown,” the U.S. government shutdown has now reached the longest in history.

Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer exclaimed that “Every day gets better for us” in the shutdown, while far-left darling Bernie Sanders shared that if “you re-open the government… we lose our leverage.” These out-of-touch points of view are highlighted in Americans for Prosperity’s (AFP) new digital ad, pressuring Democrats to come to the table and end the longest in history “Schumer Shutdown” that has left millions of Americans without SNAP benefits or paychecks.

AFP-Illinois State Director Jason Heffley issued the following statement:

“The Land of Lincoln deserves for the government to reopen, and it’s time for Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth to advocate on behalf of the federal workers without paychecks and encourage their party to come to the table to end the ‘Schumer Shutdown.’

“Far-left leaders in the Democrat Party don’t have the votes to pass their extreme policies, so they’re making Americans feel the pain. How much longer will Democrats stand by leadership that continues to put political theater ahead of paychecks?”

Recent polling commissioned by AFP and conducted by YouGov found the American people overwhelmingly oppose government shutdowns and do not want to see them used as a bargaining tactic.
