Harrisburg, Pennsylvania—Today the Pennsylvania State Senate voted to pass the Regulations in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act. Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania (AFP-PA) issued a Key Vote Alert to members of the Pennsylvania Senate encouraging them to vote for the bill.
The REINS Act would restore the balance of power in Pennsylvania by empowering the General Assembly to give an up-or-down vote to any regulation that costs $1 million or more per year. Currently, state agencies promulgate rules without input or oversight from the General Assembly, sometimes at significant costs to industry and taxpayers.
AFP-PA State Director Emily Greene issued the following statement after the grassroots group issued the Key Vote Alert:
“Pennsylvanians deserve to have a greater say in the rulemaking process—especially when those rules and regulations can have a significant economic impact on their lives. This measure will not only restore oversight and accountability, but also save the taxpayers from expensive and overbearing rules that can artificially inhibit the state’s economic growth.
“Regulations affect every facet of policymaking. It should be an easy vote for the State Senate to reclaim its lawmaking powers and give the Keystone State a chance to right-size its regulatory landscape. Now it’s on House Democrats to do the right thing and bring this bill to the floor.”
