AFP-NJ: Vote Yes on Adult-Use Cannabis Legalization & Free Market Reforms

Nov 26, 2018 by AFP

Trenton, NJ – Americans for Prosperity – New Jersey (AFP-NJ) is urging members of the Senate Budget & Appropriations Committee and the Assembly Appropriations Committee to vote “Yes” on S-2703 and introduce amendments to strengthen language of the legislation. S-2703, the New Jersey Marijuana Legalization Act, would legalize possession and personal use of cannabis for New Jerseyans over the age of 21.

AFP-NJ State Director Erica Jedynak released the following statement:

“The War on Drugs has been an epic failure. Eventually, AFP-NJ hopes that a fully-realized effort to legalize recreational marijuana will enhance public safety, provide second chances, and will remain free of cronyism and overregulation. While the current version of S-2703 is not perfect, it makes solid strides toward reshaping our criminal justice system and bringing it into the 21st century.”

AFP-NJ is actively partnering with national policy experts at the Drug Policy Project at Reason. Reason Vice President Dr. Adrian Moore said:

“Experience in other states with regulating legal cannabis shows that the New Jersey legislature should not try to solve all the relevant regulatory issues. It takes time and flexibility to work out many details in the still infant, rapidly developing cannabis markets. Instead, lawmakers should focus on creating a basic framework that supports a legal cannabis market that is safe, flexible and customer-friendly enough that licensed marijuana businesses are able to compete with and replace black market sellers.”
