AFP-NH: Income Tax Proposal Would Undermine ‘Live Free Or Die’

Concord, NH — Americans for Prosperity-New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today applauded the House for rejecting a proposal that would have opened the door to a state income tax. The proposal, backed by lawmakers and outside supporters who pushed the so-called “3-3 Tax Savings Plan,” would have fundamentally changed the Granite State’s tax structure and undermined New Hampshire’s longstanding “Live Free or Die” tradition.

Specifically, the amendment would have authorized the legislature to impose a graduated income tax under the state constitution, fundamentally changing the Granite State’s tax structure and undermining the state’s longstanding “Live Free or Die” tradition.

AFP-NH Deputy State Director Sarah Scott said:

Granite Staters have rejected an income tax time and time again because they know it would make New Hampshire like the high-tax states people are fleeing from. This amendment is a direct attack on the New Hampshire Advantage and proof that some lawmakers are still determined to grow government at the expense of taxpayers.

New Hampshire’s economic success has been built on low taxes, fiscal responsibility, and individual freedom, and AFP-NH will continue fighting to protect those values. We applaud the House for rejecting this proposal and standing with Granite Staters to ensure we do not follow the same failed path of neighboring higher-tax states.
