AFP-Nebraska Poll Shows Pillen Tax Plan Remains Unpopular

Jul 30, 2024 by AFP

LINCOLN, NE – As Nebraska state lawmakers enter day four of a special session aimed at passing Governor Jim Pillen’s tax shift proposal, Americans for Prosperity-Nebraska (AFP-NE) released a new poll today showing Nebraskans’ steady disapproval of the legislation, with 66 percent in opposition.

The new poll is the largest survey of Nebraska voters to date on their views of the governor’s plan to create the largest tax increase in state history.

AFP-NE State Director, John Gage, gave the following statement:

“When it comes to raising their taxes, Nebraskans have given the governor a resounding ‘no thanks.’ When he finally gets the message, AFP-NE stands at the ready to work with lawmakers to create a long-lasting solution to Nebraskans’ high property taxes.”

AFP-NE Survey Results Found:

  1. Only seven percent of Nebraskans support the government raising sales taxes by one billion dollars in exchange for a promise to reduce property taxes in the future.
  2. Eighty-five percent of voters would rather lawmakers cut taxes and cap spending to reduce property taxes instead of raising the sales tax to compensate.
  3. Eighty-one percent think state lawmakers should be more proactive in reigning in spending and cutting unnecessary regulations

AFP-NE encourages state lawmakers to focus their efforts on:

  1. Providing real tax relief, not a tax shift.
  2. Cutting, limiting, and stopping the growth of spending on all levels of government.
  3. Hold local government accountable, especially school districts, and halt the growth of local property tax increases.
  4. Continue consolidating or eliminating property tax authority from local government entities that are abusing their authority.
  5. Tax relief should be as direct to taxpayers as possible.
