AFP-NE Applauds Introduction of CON Repeal Bill

LINCOLN, NE – Americans for Prosperity-Nebraska (AFP-NE) released the following statement applauding State Senator Ben Hansen (R-Blair) for introducing a bill to repeal Certificate of Need (CON) laws on several state healthcare services.

AFP-NE State Director John Gage released the following statement:

“Senator Hansen’s bill is a critical step in continuing the repeal of CON in Nebraska. Our state’s CON laws are onerous, burdensome, and have resulted in all-around worse health care for Nebraskans. This reform will help modernize how our state does health care.”

Under CON, health care facilities must receive permission from the government and pay expensive fees to increase the amount of bed space at their facilities. CON laws were meant to keep healthcare costs under control by artificially limiting the supply of services, but decades of data show that these laws have directly resulted in higher prices and lower availability of quality health care.

This new law would reduce the number of services that would fall under CON, thereby providing Nebraskans with more choices and freedom in their health care.
