JACKSON, Miss. – Americans for Prosperity-Mississippi (AFP-MS) today applauded Governor Bryant for signing an important criminal justice reform measure, HB 387, into law.

HB 387 addresses a number of issues facing Mississippi’s criminal justice system. The bill would help people convicted of non-driving offenses maintain their licenses, modernize parole and probation requirements, scale back “debtor prisons” for failure to pay fines or court fees, and establish a task force to assess the state’s incarcerated population and revise sentencing procedures.

“Governor Bryant and the state legislature demonstrated Mississippi can be a model and leader for the nation on criminal justice reform,” said AFP-MS State Director Russ Latino. “HB 387 helps transform our state’s criminal justice system into one that prioritizes public safety, allows inmates to become productive members of society upon release, and reduces taxpayer costs.”
