JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Following Governor Mike Parson’s signature of Senate Bill 727 today, Americans for Prosperity – Missouri (AFP-MO) applauded him for his commitment to providing personalized education options for all Missouri students.
The sweeping legislation, which will expand the state’s charter school system and Education Savings Account (ESA) program in addition to raising public teacher salaries, faced stiff opposition from teacher unions and both parties in the state legislature. Parson signed the bill after a last-minute lobbying spree from public school superintendents against the authorization of new charter schools in Boone County.
AFP-MO state director, Jeremy Cady, gave the following statement:
“We thank Governor Parson for signing this vital legislation so that families across the Show Me State will have greater opportunities for success, and the ability to attend schools that best meet their needs.
“Parson can be proud that he will leave office next year having enacted one of the most impactful education reforms of his tenure. We look forward to working with his successor to build on this success and keep school choice as a top priority.”
Background:
AFP-MO was a leading advocate for education reform throughout this year’s session. The organization executed a six-figure advocacy campaign pushing for the ESA and charter school programs’ expansion, urging voters from across the state to contact their representatives and share their support.
