AFP-MN Demands Action on Housing Reform Bills as Affordability Crisis Worsens

Mar 25, 2025 by AFP

ST. PAUL, MN – Today, Americans for Prosperity-Minnesota (AFP-MN) urged lawmakers to prioritize working on The Minnesota Starter Home Act (SF 2229) and other key housing reforms after the Senate committee poised to discuss them was abruptly cancelled, despite Minnesota’s deepening housing crisis.

The move came after pressure from local cities looking to uphold the status quo and cling to power, highlighting the need for the state to prevent local governments from blocking commonsense, pro-growth policies that would make life more affordable for Minnesotans.

Jake Coleman, AFP-MN state director, gave the following statement:

“Minnesota’s housing crisis is entirely self-inflicted through decades of overreach and overregulation at every level of government. The MN Starter Home Act and other bills that cut unnecessary bureaucracy and red tape would create a much-needed free market solution to allow our state to build housing where demand is highest.

“Our question to state lawmakers bending to pressure is this: are you going to stand up for your constituents and make it easier for them to buy a home, or are you going to provide cover for your local government to continue blocking housing to preserve their power?”

Background:

As a member of the “Yes to Homes” coalition, AFP-MN has testified before the House and Senate housing committees throughout this year’s legislative session to emphasize how excessive land-use regulations, costly mandates, and restrictive zoning laws artificially constrain the housing supply and drive up prices.
