Topeka, KS—Today, Americans for Prosperity-Kansas (AFP-KS) launched a digital and grassroots effort to bring accountability and transparency to the Kansas Supreme Court, which is currently comprised of an unelected commission of nine individuals, most of whom are attorneys, selecting the state’s Supreme Court justices. The website, votersnotlawyers.com, will be accompanied by robust digital advertising and grassroots push by AFP-KS as the legislature takes up this important issue.
Too often Kansas residents don’t see their values reflected in the state’s Supreme Court decisions as the special interests of nine unelected insiders shape the narrative of the Sunflower State.
The campaigns will be targeted in various districts across Kansas and focus on driving voters to contact their lawmakers in support of SCR 1611 which will change how Kansas judges are selected. The digital campaign will coincide with mail and AFP-KS’ first class grassroots operation. Combined, AFP-KS will target key legislators and bring awareness to voters that the time for an impartial judiciary is now.
AFP-KS Deputy State Director, Tanner Tempel, made the following statement:
“Bypassing the will of Kansans and allowing special interest groups to influence the Court must come to an end. This session, AFP-KS will mobilize our base and send a strong message to Topeka that we need to take back the bench and bring impartial transparency to our judicial selection process.
“Kansans deserve better than lawyers pulling the strings while remaining accountable to no one. The power should be in the hands of everyday people, not just elite attorneys, as decisions made by the state Supreme Court impact the lives of all Kansans.”
