Aug 21, 2020 by AFP

AFP Chief Government Affairs Officer Brent Gardner issued the following statement:

“We support the ability of all Americans to vote. And in this unprecedented pandemic, there is no question that safe in-person voting and other alternatives will be important to ensure people are able to exercise that right. The Post Office has always been a critical part of civic engagement, and all the evidence seems to indicate that it has the capacity to meet the demands of the election this November.”

In the Key Vote Alert, Gardner writes:

Dear Member of Congress:

On behalf of millions of Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I urge you to vote NO on H.R. 8015, the Delivering for America Act, a bill that would bail out the United States Postal Service.

This $25 billion bailout of the United States Postal Service is just the latest in a series of unaffordable and unpaid spending bills passed this year. It is unnecessary since even the USPS itself says it has enough resources and liquidity, and the USPS union says it has capacity, to meet potential excess demand.

The problems at the USPS are numerous, long standing, and well known. The USPS has been on the Government Accountability’s high-risk federal areas for years and many areas are ripe for reform.  Yet Congress has done nothing but perpetuate problems at the USPS by refusing to take action.

Beyond this unnecessary spending, the bill would prohibit the USPS to make any changes to improve its operations, increase efficiency, reduce waste, and lower costs until the COVID emergency is over. At a time when all across America, families, businesses, and state and local governments are tightening their belts and finding ways to do better, Congress should call on federal entities to do the same. Prohibiting it is grievous insult.

This legislation is unaffordable and unnecessary – it will only make fixing the USPS more difficult and expensive and we urge every Representative to oppose it.

We urge you to vote no on H.R. 8015.

This vote will be recorded in our 2020 session legislative scorecard.

Sincerely,

Brent Gardner

Chief Government Affairs Officer
