NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Americans for Prosperity-Illinois (AFP-IL) State Director Andrew Nelms on Wednesday released the following statement following Governor J.B. Pritzker’s budget address:
“We agree with Gov. Pritzker that Illinois’ economic outlook is gloomy, but we disagree – strongly – on the solutions we heard on offer. Swapping our constitutionally-protected flat income tax for a graduated income tax won’t make our economy better, it will just make it easier for lawmakers to raise our taxes. Springfield has proven incapable of spending tax dollars wisely, so giving them more of what we work so hard to earn will only give them more incentive to spend. Lawmakers should reject the graduated income tax and ‘Keep Illinois Flat.’
“In recent years, many Illinois politicians have adopted a ‘block and blame’ tactic when addressing the state’s woes – block meaningful reforms that could save taxpayer money while blaming the other side of the aisle for the problems. We encourage everyone in Springfield to find ways to work together to advance meaningful reforms that help lower barriers to opportunity and help improve people’s lives. Our community of grassroots activists are ready to help anyone wanting to move us in that direction.”
