ATLANTA, GA – Today, Rep. Todd Jones introduced House Bill 987, which would allow companies and individuals to contribute to portable benefit accounts for self-employed workers. These worker-owned accounts would be managed by a bank or third-party provider and would support benefits like health insurance premiums, paid time off, and retirement savings.
The bill’s introduction follows a successful pilot program last year in which DoorDash contributed up to 4% of pre-tip earnings to accounts, managed by a third-party provider, for eligible Georgia Dashers. Nearly 75% of Dashers gained access to benefits they would not have otherwise had access to thanks to the program.
AFP-GA State Director Tony West released the following statement:
“More than one million Georgians, from rideshare and delivery drivers to real estate agents and countless others, choose flexible work. It’s past time for our state laws to support the growing small business and gig economy. From entrepreneurs to working parents with demanding schedules that do not allow for traditional jobs, this bill would provide much-needed modernization to Georgia’s benefit laws and empower Georgians to choose the work that will best support them and their families.”
