Arlington, VA – Americans for Prosperity (AFP) today urged the U.S. Senate to reject transportation funding proposals that include raising the gasoline tax, which would disproportionately impact the people who can least afford it. Instead, AFP argues that Congress should address infrastructure needs by reducing wasteful spending and prioritizing infrastructure dollars where they’re needed most.
AFP Vice President of Economic Opportunity Russ Latino issued the following statement:
“The better way to fix our nation’s roads and bridges is for Congress to spend smarter. Americans already pay billions of dollars to maintain roads and bridges, but they aren’t getting what they pay for because the federal government squanders it on unrelated projects and waste. Our lawmakers should prioritize reforms that will improve our nation’s infrastructure rather than asking Americans to reach back into their pockets.
“Improving America’s infrastructure starts by making what we currently raise go further, ensuring money for roads and bridges is spent on roads and bridges, and streamlining the mountains of red tape that make it virtually impossible to complete projects on-time and on-budget.”
Background:
The statement comes on the heels of reports that some Senators are considering various gas tax increase proposals. In April, AFP launched a campaign advocating solutions for improving America’s infrastructure without imposing new burdens on consumers through a 25-cent per gallon gas tax hike: A Road Forward: Enhancing America’s Infrastructure Without Raising Taxes
