ARLINGTON, VA—Americans for Prosperity applauds the Government Surveillance Reform Act, introduced today by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH), and Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). The bill would reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act with significant reforms to protect American civil liberties.
Watch AFP Senior Policy Analyst James Czerniawski join today’s press conference introducing the bill:
WATCH: AFP’s James Czerniawski on Government Surveillance Reform Act
Czerniawski said:
“The U.S. intelligence community has frequently misused its authorities under FISA, including Section 702, as well as other surveillance powers, eroding trust in institutions responsible for Americans’ safety. Protecting our constitutional rights and national security are not mutually exclusive goals. The Government Surveillance Reform Act is a critical step toward restoring trust, protecting constitutional rights, and maintaining public safety. We commend Senators Wyden and Lee, along with Representatives Davidson and Lofgren for their leadership in advancing this important legislation.”
Without reforms, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) threatens the privacy of every American. AFP has long called for reforms to FISA’s Section 702 and related surveillance authorities to end warrantless surveillance of Americans. The Government Surveillance Reform Act would take concrete steps toward reducing the government’s surveillance abuses and restoring some of Americans’ most basic rights.
