Lawmakers Give Utahns a “Clean Slate”

AFP backed criminal justice reform legislation signed by Governor Herbert

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Americans for Prosperity-Utah (AFP-Utah) applauded lawmakers and Governor Herbert for enacting “Clean Slate” legislation, which will automate the existing system that seals the criminal records of individuals who were convicted of certain low-level, non-violent crimes. HB 431 received unanimous support in both the House and the Senate and will give thousands of Utahns who’ve paid their debt to society the fresh start and second chance they’ve earned.

“A criminal record is a significant barrier for folks who are trying to productively re-enter society. We applaud our lawmakers for coming together and giving second chances to Utahns who’ve earned them,” said AFP-Utah State Director Heather Williamson. “Our criminal justice system must do more to rehabilitate and provide second chances to deserving individuals. We’re proud that Utah is leading the way to bring our criminal justice system closer to that ideal.”
