Florida Lawmakers Should Expand Access and Innovation in Health Care

AFP-FL launches grassroots and direct mail campaign urging lawmakers to support repeal of CON laws

Tallahassee, FL – Americans for Prosperity-Florida (AFP-FL) has launched the first phase of a robust effort urging lawmakers to repeal outdated and costly Certificate of Need (CON) laws. The group has launched a direct mail campaign aimed at members of the Senate’s Health Policy committee and the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services.

CON laws limit important health care services in our communities by preventing competition among new and existing health care providers. One way to improve health care outcomes is by increasing access to care, but CON laws stand in the way of Floridians getting the care they deserve.

AFP-FL state director, Skylar Zander released the following statement:

“CON laws protect entrenched interests at the expense of both health care providers and patients.  The debate over how to fix health care should focus on how to make health care affordable, accessible and better. Repealing CON laws is an important step we’re urging the Florida legislature to take. We hope the Senate takes up SB1712 by Senator Gayle Harrell and that the House follows Speaker Jose Oliva’s lead in championing innovative policies to free health care providers to work and for patients to receive the care they need.”

AFP-FL believes that good, accessible and affordable health care is literally vital to life.  To meet the challenges of the 21st Century, our health care system needs to be unleashed—for potential providers, for new technology, and most importantly, for patients.  This starts with tearing down artificial barriers that stand in the way of innovation and arbitrary limits on access to care.

The group will score votes on SB1712 in its annual Economic Freedom Scorecard.
