In a conversation with Americans for Prosperity, Majority Leader Scalise Expressed Confidence a Deal Will Get Done
WASHINGTON, DC – In a conversation today with Americans for Prosperity (AFP), Majority Leader Steve Scalise gave a behind-the-scenes look at how House Republicans were working together to make final adjustments to the reconciliation bill and expressed confidence that a deal will get done.
The discussion, hosted by Fox News contributor and AFP Advisory Board Member Guy Benson at AFP’s Freedom Embassy in Washington, DC, comes at a critical time for the House as it enters the final rounds of markups before the bill comes to the floor. With the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act (TCJA) set to expire at the end of the year, failure to extend them would mean Americans would face trillions in higher taxes in 2026.
Leader Scalise insisted Republicans were unified in their mission to deliver a bill to the President’s desk that extends his signature 2017 tax cuts and avert what would be the largest tax hike in history.
“Failure is not an option,” said Scalise. “These are all the things we ran on and said we’d do. Now’s the time to do it. We need to make this happen.”
Leader Scalise also underscored what this legislation would mean for the economy.
“Most Americans just want to know, how is my life going to be better or worse from a bill,” said Scalise. “With this bill, your life will be dramatically better because you’re going to have more money in your pocket, your small business that you’re working for, or large business, is going to now invest more money into the economy to allow you to get a higher paying job, to grow more jobs so they can hire more people.”
Responding to a question from a member of AFP-Louisiana’s grassroots team who attended the event in person, Leader Scalise spoke about the critical role grassroots organizations like AFP play when it comes to making good policy good politics.
“AFP knows this better than anybody … when we tell the truth about this bill, people love it,” said Scalise. “It prevents your taxes from going up. It protects small businesses so they can hire more people. It’s going to allow for wage growth for families. It’s going to allow us to produce more energy. What you all are doing at the grassroots level is critical.”
AFP Chief Government Affairs Officer Brent Gardner opened the event by reminding the audience why making the Trump tax cuts permanent has been AFP’s number one priority and the significance of taking the next step to advance the legislation to the Senate.
“It’s hard to overstate the magnitude of this legislation and the impact it could have on a generation of Americans and our country’s long-term prosperity,” said Gardner. “That’s why it’s been our number one legislative priority and why we’ve focused so much of our time, resources, and energy doing what we do best – connecting voters to the impact this legislation will have and rallying support for Congress to get it done.”
“But it’s not enough just to get this bill to the President’s desk and signed into law,” Gardner continued. “We need ensure voters understand the economic benefits are a direct result of the hard work and commitment of Republicans to tighten the belt here in Washington so their constituents can keep more of their hard-earned money.”
The event comes just days after AFP hosted a National Day of Action that reached more than 90,000 voters across the country connecting them to the benefits of the Trump tax cuts and the importance of protecting prosperity by passing reconciliation.
