Topeka, KS—This year, Americans for Prosperity-Kansas (AFP-KS) helped tackle out-of-control government regulation that was burdening the day-to-day lives of Kansans. As featured in its new video, AFP-KS alongside coalition partners and policy champions recall the pathway to passing the REINS Act, HB 2648, this year only to receive a veto shutdown by Governor Laura Kelly.
As shown in the video, AFP-KS was thrilled to get the votes needed to overturn the misguided veto and get this landmark legislation to require review of all major government regulations through the finish line.

AFP-KS State Director, Liz Patton, said in the video:
“We realized something needs to be done to reset the balance of power, we need to add checks and balances back into Kansas state government. What’s the point of having a state legislature if you have an executive agency that has the power to make laws, and no one is going to check them on what they’re doing?”
Utilizing her influence in the legislature, State Representative Barb Wasinger (HD-111), shared:
“Bureaucrats have become the legislators; they legislate by regulation and it’s killing Kansas business,” she continued, “I talked to Elizbeath and AFP and said we’ve got to do something.”
Another policy champion carrying the REINS Act, State Senator Kellie Warren (SD-11) Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and Joint Committee on Administrative Rules and Regulations, noted:
“When the legislature was considering, looking and working on the REINS Act, once AFP got involved that lightbulb went on in the Capital for a lot of folks – it changed the conversation dramatically,” she continued, “It was a great day when the legislature in Kansas passed the REINS Act.”
Through joint coalition efforts, AFP-KS was pleased to see the REINS Act become law as the national grassroots organization looks to pass similar REINS legislation in more than a dozen other states.
