Harrisburg, Pennsylvania—Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania (AFP-PA) praised the Pennsylvania Senate for passing HB 1466, a bill to protect free speech in the Commonwealth.
Both chambers of the Pennsylvania general assembly voted unanimously to allow judges to dismiss Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (commonly known as SLAPP) on issues of public concern. This law raises the threshold for libel and defamation suits while granting greater protections to the press, whistle-blowers, and engaged citizens.
AFP-PA Deputy State Director Emily Greene issued the following statement after the bill passed in the Senate:
“Today’s unanimous voted in the Senate, shows how lawmakers can work together and advance freedom for Pennsylvanians, even in a divided government. AFP-PA is encouraged by this significant step forward for civil liberties and open discourse.
“AFP-PA offers its sincere thanks and congratulations to every member of the General Assembly for working together and helping to make freedom ring louder in the Keystone State. We hope that Governor Shapiro will sign this bill expeditiously to protect free speech across the Commonwealth.”
