HELENA, Montana – Americans for Prosperity-Montana (AFP-Montana) applauds Governor Bullock for signing crucial criminal justice reform legislation into law. H.B. 110 allows men and women who have been charged with a misdemeanor to enter a program that will enable them to avoid prison if they are unable to post bail.
“At AFP, we’re working toward a criminal justice system that keeps our communities safe, puts behind bars only those people who should be there, and ensures the punishment fits the crime,” said AFP-Montana State Director David Herbst. “The government should ensure that individuals who have been accused of a crime appear for trial, but people shouldn’t be jailed simply because they can’t afford to post bond. This legislation will use risk assessments, not the amount of money someone has, to determine whether an individual is locked up before they get their day in court. We commend Governor Bullock for signing this legislation into law. We look forward to more opportunities to work with the Governor to break down barriers that are keeping Montanans from transforming their lives.”
