The cost of a typical Thanksgiving dinner is way too high.
Far too many families continue to struggle under the weight of rampant inflation. They’re already spending nearly $1,000 more per month on basic needs than just three years ago.
The main culprit? The main dish.
As you know, turkey is the main driver of the price of a Thanksgiving dinner. According to the latest edition of the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual Thanksgiving dinner survey, turkey traditionally accounts for 43% of the total dinner cost. This year is no different.
Let’s look at the prices of 11 Thanksgiving dinner staples — turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberries, and the rest of the traditional side dishes and desserts.
As you’ll see in the chart below, prices for these items are a mixed bag; some are up, and others are down from last year.
While the pace of inflation has slowed somewhat over the last year, food prices are still much higher than they were five years ago. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food today costs 25% more than it did in 2019.
Why is your Thanksgiving dinner more expensive?
Since 2019 your money has lost value due to spending decisions made in Washington, D.C. Reckless spending — mind-numbing amounts spent in the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act,” “Build Back Better,” and other COVID-19 relief spending bills — in a short amount of time have significantly increased the money supply.
Today, your money buys far less than it used to, and there’s one place responsible for it: Washington, D.C.
A surplus of money in circulation combined with supply chain issues and pent-up consumer demand left too many dollars chasing too few products.
The need to stop irresponsible Washington spending remains. That’s precisely what Americans for Prosperity is working on.
