Capitol Hill meetings highlight tax reform urgency

Jun 23, 2025 by AFP

Dozens of grassroots activists with Americans for Prosperity converged on Capitol Hill last week in a powerful show of support to extend the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Their message to lawmakers was clear: This bill is critical to the future of our economy — and the time to act is now.

AFP activists from more than a dozen states participated in 135 meetings in just one day, speaking with key lawmakers like Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming, the Senate majority whip, and House Speaker Mike Johnson.

“This is the most consequential policy battle of this Congress,” said Tyler Lindholm, AFP-Wyoming state director, pictured above with Sen. Barrasso (center) and AFP Senior Government Affairs Liaison Will Burger (right). “And we’re making sure lawmakers know their constituents are behind this effort.”

AFP didn’t just bring its grassroots convening power to Washington. They connected grassroots voices with their lawmakers — including over 200 handwritten postcards from Montanans delivered directly to Sen. Tim Sheehy. You can see a short video clip of AFP-Montana State Director Jesse Ramos delivering constituent letters to Sen. Sheehy by clicking here.

What lawmakers are hearing from AFP

In meetings across Capitol Hill, AFP’s team focused on several key messages:

  • The tax cuts must be made permanent to fuel long-term growth.
  • This bill is about more than taxes — it also addresses affordable American energy, revitalizing our health care system, and addressing border security.
  • Delaying action could cost Congress support before the 2026 midterms — handing progressives the narrative they need to retake Congress.
  • Making sure Congress knows what’s at stake for families, businesses, and the economy.

Our team spoke with key senators, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Sen. Lisa Murkowski, to explain how the bill fits into national priorities. Pictured below are our state activists with Sens. Thune and Murkowski.

Why making the 2017 tax cuts permanent matters

Here’s what’s at stake if Congress fails to act:

  1. Higher taxes and smaller paychecks for families and small businesses
  2. Slower job growth as businesses deal with higher rates
  3. Less capital for local investments and innovation
  4. Greater economic uncertainty in an already volatile climate
  5. More centralized power in Washington

What makes AFP’s strategy unique?

Unlike other D.C.-based groups, AFP mobilizes real constituents with real stories from across the country to make policy more personal. Their message carries weight because it comes from the bottom up.

AFP is the only grassroots organization capable of executing a full-scale strategy like thisAnd this visit to the Capitol is just one part of AFP’s nationwide campaign to push this legislation across the finish line.

AFP’s full-court press: Air and ground tactics combined

AFP’s multipronged national strategy includes:

  • Direct lobbying from state directors and policy experts
  • Public engagement campaigns that connect voters with their representatives

“We’re blanketing the airwaves and knocking on doors,” said Scott Simon, AFP-Louisiana state director. “This fight is urgent — and deeply personal for so many Americans.”
