Businesses and communities in South Carolina are stepping up to respond to COVID-19

Apr 7, 2020 by AFP

These are uncertain times as the world continues to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

But amid great challenges, communities and businesses have risen up to care and provide for each other.

South Carolina’s businesses are no exception. All over the state, business leaders and communities have joined forces to donate medical equipment, provide meals, keep local economies going, and give back to communities affected by the virus.

Here are four examples of how businesses and communities are meeting the needs of South Carolina:

  1. Businesses and education centers are using their resources to produce masks for healthcare professionals. In the Lowcountry, Medical University of South Carolina and West Ashley High School are using 3D printers to create masks. Meanwhile in Rock Hill, Composite Resources and CAT Resources have shifted production to help make masks.
  2. The Palmetto Shirt Company is using its resources to produce “Palmetto Strong” shirts and is donating part of the proceeds to nurses who are fighting the virus.
  3. Restaurants in Travelers Rest are working to provide for the local community, including a smokehouse giving free meals to individuals affected by COVID-19 and a restaurant giving all the proceeds from gift card sales directly to its employees.
  4. United Way of Greenville County established a relief fund to support local nonprofits working with affected or vulnerable communities. Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina has launched a similar COVID-19 Relief & Recovery Fund to receive resources and donations to assist those working with senior citizens, children, and those in the hospitality and tourism industries that have been disproportionately affected.

In times of crisis, South Carolinians are finding ways to innovate and take care of each other.
