Grassroots group commends lawmakers for standing for SD small business, economic prosperity

PIERRE, S.D.—Americans for Prosperity-South Dakota (AFP-SD) on Monday praised House Commerce and Energy Committee members for advancing SB 173, a bill to ease restrictions on South Dakota’s microbreweries, enabling these businesses to grow and thrive.

“The 20 microbreweries in South Dakota combine for an economic impact of over $200 million,” said AFP-SD Deputy State Director Andrew Curley. “And at a time when craft breweries are popping up all over the country, we need to do what we can to make sure our current small craft brewers can keep pace and expand, while creating a welcoming business atmosphere for future microbrewers. This bill removes barriers to growth and allows them to better compete in the marketplace. We thank the committee for advancing this bill and urge the full House membership to do the same.”

Smaller businesses create opportunities for South Dakotans to work and build on their dreams. Many South Dakota entrepreneurs have joined the craft beer boom, building their own microbreweries to share their creations. This bill would allow brewers to sell directly to retailers and would raise the cap on the amount they can produce to 30,000 barrels.
