Americans for Prosperity: House Denies Effective Treatment to Suffering South Carolinians

May 5, 2022 by AFP

COLUMBIA, SC — Americans for Prosperity – South Carolina (AFP-SC) decried the House for ruling the Compassionate Care Act out of order. This procedural ruling blocks the House from debating the substance of the bill and having a vote on the bill itself.

This legislation would allow cannabis to be prescribed by licensed physicians, acquired from a highly regulated state-authorized dispensary, and used for 13 specific conditions, under a clear set of rules.

AFP-SC State Director Candace Carroll released the following statement:

“The House’s action will deny an effective treatment to South Carolinians suffering from autism, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, and the effects of chemotherapy in cancer patients, among others. Many states allow for this compassionate use, and this year, South Carolina should have joined them. With just four legislative days until the end of session, we urge the Legislature to find a path forward to resurrect this bill and provide much needed relief for patients across South Carolina.”
