Americans for Prosperity: HB1201 is “Sham of Ethics Reform”
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Americans for Prosperity-Tennessee (AFP-TN) came out against HB1201, after Speaker Cameron Sexton released the bill that will ban AFP and other grassroots advocacy groups from mentioning candidates in the 60-days leading up to an election, essentially censoring these groups from communicating with voters.
AFP-TN State Director Tori Venable released the following statement:
“This bill is a sham of ethics reform. Transparency is for the government and privacy is for the people, not the other way around. This ethics reform misses the opportunity to require government to be transparent about the amount of tax dollars it uses to lobby itself. Instead, it gets after small dollar donor privacy. Transparency promotes trust and accountability; and government needs both.”
