NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Americans for Prosperity-Tennessee (AFP-TN) applauded House passage of a bill to request a waiver of federal Medicaid rules to develop a plan imposing a work requirement on some able-bodied TennCare enrollees.
“Opportunity and prosperity are not created through government dependency,” said AFP-TN State Director Tori Venable. “Asking people who are able-bodied to earn for themselves is not a hardship, but a hand up. The dignity of working toward a better life for themselves and their families will help the least fortunate more than any government check ever could. We commend Governor Bill Haslam, Speaker Beth Harwell, and Rep. Dan Howell for taking steps to add accountability to TennCare and provide a pathway to independence for able-bodied Tennesseans.”
Additional entitlement reforms are moving through the legislature that will use savings from reducing fraud to provide for those truly in need, giving them additional transitional assistance as they work their way off the system towards economic freedom.
