AFP-SC Says Passage of Legislation Will Expand Work Opportunities for Certain Beauty Industry Professionals

COLUMBIA, SC—Americans for Prosperity-South Carolina (AFP-SC) commended the Senate passage of S. 1132 which would expand the types of services certain cosmetologists could provide beyond a brick-and-mortar salon by de-regulating beauty services such as hair braiding and makeup artists as well as S. 857 to expand mobile cosmetology units.

If passed by the House, AFP-SC said that the legislation could greatly benefit the business community by expanding opportunities for employment in the beauty industry throughout the state.

AFP-SC State Director, Candace Carroll, recently joined radio host Keven Cohen on 100.7 FM to discuss this bill and stated:

“We are in favor of getting government out of the way of any occupational licensing, reducing burdens, and opening the marketplace so people can pursue whatever their version of the American dream is.”

“At Americans for Prosperity we try to take the voice of the people to the State House, and we understand that we can take their concerns and talk to elected officials on their behalf; that’s exactly what we tried to do with these bills.”

Background

AFP-SC issued key vote alerts to legislators urging them to vote in support of both S. 1132 and S. 857 to continue to build on the state’s occupational licensing reform. Last year, legislation to prohibit the state from denying an occupational license based solely or in part on a prior criminal conviction was unanimously passed.
