Lansing, Michigan—On the fifth anniversary of the US Supreme Court’s decision in Janus v. AFSCME, Americans for Prosperity-Michigan (AFP-MI) celebrated the anniversary and condemned legislation signed by Governor Whitmer that strips workers of fundamental first amendment rights to free association. Annie Patnaude, State Director for Americans for Prosperity-Michigan, issued the following statement:

“Sadly, on this 5th Anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Janus v. AFSCME, Michigan’s private-sector workers are less free than their public-sector counterparts.

“Ironically, even as Governor Whitmer continues to brag about her commitment to freedom and opportunity, she happily stripped workers of their   First Amendment rights to opt-out of their union. The Michigan legislature also voted to strip public-sector employees of their rights. Thankfully, the Supreme Court’s Janus decision blocks that law from taking effect.

“It’s no wonder Michiganders continue to see their friends and family leave the state in search of jobs and opportunity elsewhere. No one should be fired from their job for refusing to join a workplace union.

“We appreciate the actions of the principled jurists on the Supreme Court who have stood in the way of politicians who are more than happy to treat workers as sacrificial offerings to their union cronies.”
