Lansing, Michigan—Americans for Prosperity-Michigan (AFP-MI), the largest grassroots organization in the Great Lake State, issued a stinging rebuke of the Growing Michigan Together Council’s report on how to grow Michigan’s population.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer convened the council earlier this year to address Michigan’s anemic population growth as Michiganders flee the state. Among the Council’s recommendations are billions of dollars in public spending and doubling down on the state’s broken public education system.
AFP-MI State Director Annie Patnaude issued a statement on the Council’s recommendations:
“Governor Whitmer’s “Growing Michigan Together Council” is yet another attempt by the Governor to obfuscate the damage her own administration has done to the state over the past five years. For three consecutive years, Michigan has shown negative population growth as Michiganders flee the high taxes and burdensome regulatory market that’s become more expensive and more rigid under Whitmer’s administration.
“The Council’s recommendation to further expand our state’s failed public education system is just one of many predetermined suggestions that benefit Whitmer’s allies and turn a blind eye to a system that fails students. Michiganders are voting with their feet. They want more freedom and less government. Unfortunately, big-government Gretchen refuses to address these problems and continues to push a tired and broken agenda—the same agenda that’s driving people and investment to other states.”
