AFP-KS Releases Statement on Special Committee on Civil Asset Forfeiture
Wichita, KS–The special interim committee on civil asset forfeiture marks an important inflection point in Kansas police reform.
Earlier this year, Americans for Prosperity-KS (AFP-KS) released an updated report analyzing civil asset forfeiture in Kansas and found that current laws allow law enforcement to unconstitutionally confiscates people’s property with very little recourse. Now, Kansas lawmakers have the opportunity to correct this longstanding issue in the state.
Jonathan Lueth, Deputy State Director of AFP-KS, issued the following statement:
“In 2018, the General Assembly passed a forfeiture transparency law because they suspected civil asset forfeiture was being abused. The data makes clear Kansas’ current forfeiture laws permit law enforcement to unconstitutionally confiscate people’s property with minimal chance of recovery. We are fighting to protect people’s constitutionally guaranteed property rights and due process. Now that we have greater transparency, its clear we need forfeiture reform.”
