Americans for Prosperity Applauds Senate Passage of Paycheck Protection

Grassroots group urges House to follow suit.

CHARLESTON, W.Va.—Americans for Prosperity-West Virginia (AFP-WV) on Friday commended state senators for passing the “Paycheck Protection Bill” to protect the free speech and unauthorized paycheck deductions for political purposes.

“We are thankful for those principled senators who voted today to protect West Virginians and their families from this blatant violation of their free speech rights,” said Jason Huffman, AFP-WV State Director. “People should never have to contribute to political causes they don’t support. This bill is a win for hardworking Mountaineers and our constitutional rights. Again, we thank the senators who helped advance this bill, and we strongly urge those in the House to do the same.”

Currently, some employers can deduct wages from a worker’s paycheck for use in political activities without first seeking that worker’s permission. SB 335, the paycheck protection bill, would ensure that workers’ wages are protected by giving them a choice as to if they want their employer to deduct wages from their paycheck for political purposes. This process is a simple means by which to ensure that the rights of workers are being upheld in the workplace.
