Americans for Prosperity-Texas Statement on Big 3 Sales, Property Tax Proposal

AUSTIN, Texas – Following the announcement that Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick and Speaker Bonnen support a proposal to lower the property tax burden by raising Texas’ sales tax, AFP-Texas State Director Jerome Greener issued the following statement:

“We are encouraged to see a proposal to lower property taxes in a swap with sales taxes. But any such legislation should only be considered after passage of comprehensive property tax reform that is applied to all taxing entities. This would ensure that taxpayers can better control how much government they are willing to pay for. Voters have seen so-called “buy downs” only result in higher taxes, and that can’t happen again.”
