Americans for Prosperity Louisiana Praises U.S. Supreme Court Ruling on Split Jury Verdicts

Apr 21, 2020 by AFP

BATON ROUGE, La. – Americans for Prosperity-Louisiana (AFP-LA) praised the U.S. Supreme Court ruling abolishing split jury verdicts across the country.

AFP-LA has long been a proponent of unanimous jury decisions, mobilizing voters in 2018 to support a ballot measure to change the Louisiana Constitution in order to require unanimous jury verdicts in all non-capital felony cases.

AFP-LA Interim State Director James Lee issued the follow statement:

“We applaud the Supreme Court’s prudent decision to abolish the split jury verdicts across our country and particularly in Louisiana where these decisions have led to the incarceration of far too many. Thanks to the efforts of our grassroots activists and the strong support of voters, a similar battle was won in 2018 which gave our residents a justice system which places more value on the rights of the accused. This new ruling reinforces those rights and gives hope Louisiana inmates previously convicted by a split jury.”
