Americans for Prosperity Applauds Kentucky Legislature’s Passage of Educational Freedom Bill

Mar 18, 2021 by AFP

FRANKFORT, KY — Americans for Prosperity-Kentucky (AFP-KY) today applauded the legislature’s passage of the Educational Opportunity Act (HB 563), legislation that seeks to provide educational freedom to children in the Bluegrass State. The measure will not only give low- and middle-income students educational opportunities, it will create open enrollment policies so they can attend a school outside of their district.

House Majority Whip Rep. Chad McCoy (R-Bardstown) and Senator Ralph Alvarado (R-Winchester) deserve an enormous amount of credit for leading on this issue over the last several years. The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk for signature.

AFP-KY State Director Michael Conway issued the following statement:

“Every child in this country deserves access to a quality education, regardless of the ZIP code he or she lives in. We are thrilled the legislature has acted to expand educational freedom and opportunity to Kentucky’s students, and we urge Governor Beshear to put students ahead of special interest groups and sign it into law. His support will make a direct and positive impact on thousands of children in our state.”

Background

The Educational Opportunity Act will expand educational opportunity for families by allowing their children to cross district lines to attend school. It will also establish an education opportunity account program, funded by private donors who would be eligible for tax credits. By providing these charitable incentives, this legislation will help ensure the neediest families are empowered to access the best education available for their child.
