Grassroots group encourages lawmakers to focus on people and policy alongside funding

Lansing, MI — Americans for Prosperity-Michigan (AFP-MI) applauded the bipartisan focus on policing and community safety after Republican gubernatorial candidate James Craig and Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer both announced plans for addressing concerns with law enforcement and community safety on Monday.

AFP-MI Community Engagement Director Diana Prichard had this to say:

“We’ve seen a lot of bipartisan progress in our criminal justice system over the past couple of years, and we’re glad to see Chief Craig and Governor Whitmer keeping that spirit alive today.

“Safety is a core government function and should be funded well, but funding must come alongside good policy. Supporting officers means providing top notch training, ensuring our agencies have the best policies in place to foster community trust, and designing our system so that it functions in a way that respects our constitutional rights as Americans.

“The state Senate has been hard at work on a bipartisan package of bills that will improve the way we serve and protect our communities and we look forward to seeing that package through the legislature this fall. As lawmakers consider the ideas and proposals unveiled on Monday we encourage them to remember the reason they began tackling this topic to begin with: good law enforcement policy will put the people of Michigan and the safety of their communities first.”
