AFP-VA Applauds PWC Residents for Fight Against Taxpayer-Subsidized Stadium

Jul 14, 2017 by AFP

WOODBRIDGE, VA – Prince William County Supervisors have been considering a deal to build a new $35 million stadium for the Minor League Potomac Nationals using taxpayer dollars, but that deal seems increasingly unlikely according to a statement yesterday by P-Nats owner Art Silber. Americans for Prosperity-Virginia (AFP-VA) has long opposed this deal, which the organization viewed as a corporate welfare project that put taxpayers on the hook for millions.

“This isn’t about sports. This is about taxpayers being on the hook for millions” said AFP-VA Field Director Tyler Muench, who spearheaded this fight. “It’s tempting to think this stadium would be an economic boon to our community, but history shows that stadiums never deliver the promised economic benefits. We thank Prince William County Supervisors Ruth Anderson, Maureen Caddigan, Pete Candland and Jeanine Lawson for holding their ground on behalf of the taxpayers and urge them to continue opposing any taxpayer-subsidized stadium deal.”

“The Prince William County stadium victory proves the incredible effectiveness of our Virginia grassroots army in their fight against the irresponsible use of taxpayer money,” AFP-VA State Director JC Hernandez. “We hope to continue this momentum by identifying and defeating other instances of corporate welfare and wasteful government spending throughout the state.”

Americans for Prosperity-Virginia has been a leading opponent of using taxpayer money to build stadiums and has helped Prince William County residents organize against this deal.
