AFP-Utah Responds to Senate Judiciary Committee’s Vote to Advance Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s Confirmation to Supreme Court

Oct 16, 2020 by AFP

SALT LAKE CITY– Americans for Prosperity – Utah (AFP-UT) applauds members of the Senate Judiciary Committee for setting a date for the mark up next Thursday, October 22, 2020. The grassroots group has continued to drive their full-scale national campaign to support Judge Barrett’s confirmation across the Beehive State, highlighting her impeccable qualifications as a nominee who will interpret the law as written and not legislate from the bench.

According to the latest Morning Consult poll on Wednesday, support for Judge Barrett’s confirmation continues to grow across the aisle. AFP activists have already generated more than 400,000 letters and phone calls to their senators nationwide, with Utahns having sent or made more than 16,000 letters and phone calls to Sens. Romney and Lee.

AFP-UT State Director Heather Andrews issued the following statement:

“We applaud Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsay Graham for setting a date for the committee mark up on Judge Barrett’s nomination. Judge Barrett’s performance during the hearings proved she’d defend the Constitution and bring a fair and independent mind to the bench. While we have known where Sen. Lee stands, we applaud Sen. Romney for coming out after the hearings to share his support. Utahns should continue to contact our senators to thank them for their efforts throughout this process.”

Background on AFP’s Campaign:

Americans for Prosperity’s national campaign, which currently focuses on thirteen key states, launched minutes after President Trump nominated Judge Barrett with digital ads and phone and text grassroots outreach.

AFP also set up a unique UniteForBarrett.com web page that empowers activists to contact their senators in support of Judge Barrett. Several waves of targeted direct-mail, layered digital, and other tactics are being deployed in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia throughout the coming weeks.

AFP activists have already produced more than 400,000 calls and letters to their senators since the beginning of the campaign to confirm Judge Barrett.

AFP heavily engaged its grassroots to support the confirmation of qualified nominees to the Supreme Court in previous years. With the dedicated efforts of its activists nationwide, AFP directly reached more than one million Americans in support of Justice Kavanaugh’s confirmation in 2018 through a combination of door-knocking, phone-banking, and other tactics.

Background on Judge Amy Coney Barrett:

Barrett received her B.A. in English literature from Rhodes College in 1994 and her J.D. from Notre Dame in 1997. While at Notre Dame, she served as executive editor of the Notre Dame Law Review and received the Hoynes Prize, the highest honor at the law school.

After receiving her J.D., Barrett served in two clerkships with accomplished, constitutionalist jurists. First, with Judge Laurence H. Silberman at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and then with Justice Antonin Scalia at the Supreme Court of the United States. Barrett worked in private practice for two years in Washington D.C. before embarking on a distinguished career as a law professor at George Washington University, University of Virginia, and University of Notre Dame.

President Donald J. Trump nominated Barrett for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit on May 8, 2017. She was confirmed by the Senate on October 31, 2017. On November 2, 2017, Barrett received her commission to the court.
