AFP Urges De-escalation of Trade War Ahead of G-20 Trade Talks

Nov 30, 2018 by AFP

Arlington, Va. – Americans for Prosperity (AFP) President Tim Phillips issued the following statement today ahead of President Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Group of 20 (G-20) summit:

“The strength of the U.S. economy is a direct result of the tax and regulatory reform spearheaded by this administration and President Trump deserves tremendous credit. But one of the greatest threats to America’s economy is an escalating trade war. There is no question that China’s own protectionist policies and unjust practices should be addressed, but tariffs – which are taxes on American consumers and businesses – are the wrong approach.

“As President Trump prepares to meet with President Xi at the G-20, we’re hopeful that these talks will result in a path to de-escalation and ultimately the administration’s stated goal of removing all trade barriers, opening markets, and ensuring our economy continues to thrive. We’re also encouraged by reports that each side is considering an agreement that will pause any new tariffs while negotiations continue, and we urge President Trump to provide that temporary relief to American businesses and consumers.”
