Grassroots calls on Legislature to quickly act on proposed legislation that creates competitive advantage and protects taxpayers
CONCORD, N.H. – Americans for Prosperity-New Hampshire (AFP-NH), the state’s leading grassroots group for economic freedom, on Thursday applauded Governor Sununu for calling a special session of the Legislature to pass legislation in response to the Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, which ruled that states can now force businesses with no physical presence in the state to collect sales taxes. The ruling could require New Hampshire retailers to collect taxes for other states and taxing authorities, despite New Hampshire not having a general sales tax.
“Since the Pine Tree Riot of 1772, New Hampshire has always resisted unjust out-of-state taxation. Forcing New Hampshire businesses to become tax collectors for the over 10,000 taxing authorities across the country would impose tremendous compliance costs that stifles business opportunity and growth, particularly among small employers. We will mobilize our grassroots activists in support of this legislation that creates a competitive advantage for our state to make New Hampshire the Delaware of online retailers,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director. “The legislature should act swiftly and strengthen our New Hampshire Advantage of having the most tax-friendly environment in the country. We thank the governor for calling the special session and will work to ensure New Hampshire retailers are protected from states that don’t understand what limited government means.”
