AFP-MI: Transparency and Accountability Should be a Requirement for Economic Development Dollars

Jan 27, 2023 by AFP

“Keep SOAR fund and process intact,” says grassroots group

Lansing, Michigan—The new Democratic majority may be tempted to abolish the SOAR fund in favor of a less transparent process, but the Michigan chapter of Americans for Prosperity (AFP-MI) today urged the legislature to preserve a transparent and accountable process in which Michiganders’ duly elected officials vet these projects through the appropriations process.

AFP-MI State Director Annie Patnaude issued the following statement:

“Every dollar spent on economic development comes out of the paychecks of hardworking Michigan families. Taxpayers deserve a transparent and accountable process that allows them to see how—and to whom—their dollars are being directed.

“Governor Whitmer has called for ongoing funding for the MEDC, which would then be able to fund projects without legislative involvement. On the heels of last year’s record-setting $76 billion budget that raised many questions and concerns, we urge the new legislature to embrace a more transparent process—Keep the SOAR fund and process intact.

“Michigan’s new legislature can—and should—do better with precious taxpayer resources.”
