AFP Key Vote Alert: Vote “NO” on H.R. 842, the so-called Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act

Mar 9, 2021 by AFP

Dear Member of Congress,

On behalf Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I write urging you to vote “NO” on H.R. 842, the so-called Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, which makes unprecedented, harmful changes to federal labor laws. While supporters argue the PRO Act would expand worker rights, the reality is it would undermine worker freedom, erode privacy, and destroy opportunity for millions of Americans. AFP also issued key votes on PRO Act amendments.

The PRO Act would, among other things, implement language nearly identical to California’s controversial AB-5 that would reclassify many independent contractors as employees under the National Labor Relations Act, restricting the opportunity of many to pursue independent, flexible work at a time when millions are out of work. The PRO Act would also violate the privacy of workers by requiring employers to release the private, personal information of their employees to union organizers and deprive workers of the right to vote on unionization in a secret ballot election under certain circumstances. This bill would also overturn and ban state right-to-work laws throughout the country, which have protected workers’ freedom of choice and been an economic boon for communities.

The PRO Act would impose severe harm on the American economy at a time we can least afford it, when tens of thousands of small businesses have already been shuttered, millions more are struggling to keep their doors open, and workers are in desperate need of greater flexibility and opportunity to pursue work that allows them to juggle multiple priorities.

Congress should instead focus on policies that expand worker freedom and eliminate barriers to opportunity during these challenging times.

We urge you to vote “NO” on H.R. 842. This vote will be included in our legislative scorecard.

Sincerely,

Brent Gardner
