AFP-IL: Bipartisan Opposition to Graduated Income Tax Grows

May 9, 2019 by AFP

GENEVA, Ill. – Americans for Prosperity-Illinois (AFP-IL) applauded Rep. Sam Yingling (62nd District) and Rep. Jon Carroll (57th District) for standing up for their constituents and announcing opposition to Governor Pritzker’s proposal to scrap the Illinois’ flat income tax and replace it with a graduated one. AFP-IL has long opposed a graduated income tax, asserting that it would give lawmakers greater latitude to increase taxes on Illinoisans.

AFP-IL State Director Andrew Nelms issued the following statement:

“We thank Reps. Yingling and Carroll for recognizing the harm a graduated income tax would have on Illinoisans. The growing concern over the graduated income tax from both sides of the aisle underscores the need to reconsider this approach to fiscal policy. Replacing our flat income tax for a graduated one is tantamount to handing lawmakers a blank check paid for by taxpayers. At a time when Illinoisans are already shouldering the highest tax burden in the country, the last thing we should do is make it easier for lawmakers to raise our taxes. We urge Reps. Yingling and Carroll’s colleagues to join them in standing up for taxpayers and against this massive tax hike on Illinois families and job creators.”
