AFP-FL: Governor DeSantis Removes Barriers To Employment

Jun 30, 2020 by AFP

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Americans for Prosperity-Florida (AFP-FL) today commended Governor Ron DeSantis for signing HB 1193, a bill that helps Floridians find meaningful and productive work through the removal or significant reduction of overburdensome occupational licenses. With nearly 30% of Florida’s workforce requiring a license to work, this bill represents a significant step towards lowering unemployment and helping the economy recover stronger.

AFP-FL State Director Skylar Zander issued the following statement:

“Jobs should be awarded based on skills, not a government permission slip. By signing this bill into law Governor DeSantis is helping Floridians find meaningful and productive work to help them better provide for their communities, their loved ones, and themselves. We thank the governor for signing this bill into law and breaking down barriers for Floridians who simply want to work.”

Background:

Occupational licenses provide a barrier to people making an honest effort to find employment, sometimes requiring hundreds of dollars and hours-worth of classes for certification. With nearly 30% of the workforce requiring a license to work, Florida ranks as the forth worst state in licensing requirements. These barriers prevent gainful employment, keeping people from acquiring a job even if they have the requisite skills.
