AFP Calls on Washington to Lower Trade Barriers, Not Create New Ones with the Reciprocal Trade Act

Arlington, VA – Following President Trump’s remarks in tonight’s State of the Union address urging Congress to pass the “Reciprocal Trade Act” (H.R. 764), AFP Chief Government Affairs Officer Brent Gardner issued the following statement calling on lawmakers to oppose the legislation that would grant the executive branch even greater power to unilaterally impose tariffs:

“Tariffs are taxes, and we shouldn’t match other countries’ high taxes with high taxes of our own. The Reciprocal Trade Act is not the answer. Tariffs hurt American consumers and business and undermine our economic growth. We should be working toward zero-tariffs, not equal tariffs. We urge Congress to reject it and instead support legislation that would require congressional approval of tariff increases.”
